Section 21: Powers, Functions and meeting of the Senate

1- The Senate shall be the plenary authority of the University and shall formulate and review from time to time, the broad policies and programmes of the University and devise measures for the improvement and development of the University and shall also have the following powers and functions namely:-

(i) To consider and pass the annual report, financial statement and the Budget estimates prepared by the Executive Council and to adopt them with or without modification;

(ii) To make Statutes concerning the administration of the affairs of the university including prescribe the procedures to be followed by the authorities and the officers of the University in the discharge of their function.

2- (1) The Senate shall meet at least twice a year on dates to be fixed by the Chancellor and one of such meetings shall be called the annual meeting.

(2) The Chancellor may, whenever he thinks fit and shall. Upon a requisition in writing signed by not less than fifteen members of the Senate, convene a special meeting of the Senate.

(3) For every meeting of the Senate, fourteen days notice shall be given, However, in emergent situation the meeting of the Senate may be called by the Chancellor at short notice;

(4) One third of the members existing on the rolls of the Senate shall form the quorum.

(5) Each member shall have one vote and if there be equality of votes on any question to be determined by the Senate, the person presiding over the meeting shall, in addition, have a casting vote;

(6) To exercise such other powers and perform such other duties as may be conferred or assigned by this Act or the Rules.
