Section 16: Collector to acquire land

(1) On receipt of a copy of a notification under section 15, the Collector shall issue notices to the owner of such land and other persons interested in it to show cause why such land should not be acquired and after giving them a reasonable opportunity of being heard, if satisfied that such land is required for a water- -course, proceed to acquire and take possession of such land under the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894 (Central Act 1 of 1894) as if a declaration had been issued by the Government for the acquisition thereof under section 6 of that Act and as if the Government had thereupon directed the Collector to take order for the acquisition of such land under section 7 of the said Act and as if the Government had issued orders for the immediate possession being taken under section 17 of the said Act.

(2) Notwithstanding anything contained in the Land Acquisition Act, 1894 (Central Act I of 1894), the acquisition of any land under sub-section (1) shall be deemed to be for a public purpose.

(3) Save as aforesaid, the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894 (Central Act I of 1894), shall apply to acquisitions to be made under this Act.
