The following Act of the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of lhi received t e assent of the President of India on 13-6-2003 and is h reby published for general informal· o . • ''The Delhi Official Languages Act, 2000 (Delhi Act No. 8 of 2003) (As passed by the Legislati .e Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi 3-4-2000) An Act to provide for adoption o Hindi in Devnagri script as the first official language and Punjabi in Gurmukhi scri t and Urdu in P rsian script as the second languages to be used for the official purposes and other matters of the • ational Ca ital Territory of Delhi. • Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of National Capital Territory of Delhi in he Fifty First year of he . Republic of India as follows :- •

1. Short title, extent and commenceme -{ l) This Act may be called the Delhi Official Language Act, 2()()().

(2) It extends to the whole of the ational Capital Territory of De hi.

(3) It shall come into force on such ate as the Government may by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint.

2. Definiti ons. In this Act, un ess the CO c t otherwise requires,

(a) "Delhi" means the National Capital Tc · ·1 ry of Delhi;

(b) "Government" means the Govcmmcn f ationa Capital Territory of Delhi.

(c) "Legislative Assembly" means the Legislative As ernbly of the National Capital lerritoryof Delhi.

3. Hindi to be Official Language of Delhi. Hindi i Devnagri script shall, with effect from such dale as the Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoi in this behalf, be the Official Language of Delhi.

4. Punjabi and rdu t be second Official Lan?1Uages of Delhi. Punjabi in Gurmukhi script and lJr in Persian script shal be the second Official Language of Delhi for the following purposes, namely: . a) Receipt and reply of applications and petitions by all Offices of Government of NC of Delhi in Ur Punjabi. (b) Publication of the ranslation of important Government rules, regulations and Gazette · otifications in Urdu and Punjab· also. ,

(c) Sig boar so Official Buildings, Government offices and roads etc. will bear the names iri Urdu and Punjabi also. /

(d) Publicatio of i portant Government advertisements in tlie News Papers in Urdu and Punjabi also . .

(e) Proceedings ofLegis a ive Assembly will be recorded and issued simultaneously in Urdu and Punjabi also wherever required.
