Section 57: Duration of assessment

(1) The State Government shall, when confirming an assessment under sub-section (1) of section 56, fix a period of time for which the assessment shall remain in force.

(2) The period fixed under sub-section (1) shall be 2[Forty years]:

Provided that--

(i) in order to bring the duration of assessment on a uniform basis within a district the State Government may sanction shorter term for any local area;

(ii) nothing in this sub-section shall affect any assessment in force at the time of the commencement of this Act or apply to an area which has been declared to be an urban assessment circle under the provisions of 1[sub-section (4)] of section 54.
