Section 37: The Duties and Responsibility of Superintendent

(1) The Superintendent shall have the responsibility to ascertain that the compliance of human rights that the prisoners are entitled to are not impinged upon or restricted beyond the limit inherent in the process of incarceration itself and to ensure that prison programmes are geared towards the overall objective of imprisonment in terms of reform and rehabilitation of prisoners.

(2) The Superintendent shall subject to any order of the Government or the Head of Directorate of Prisons, be in charge of the executive management of the prison in all matters relating to economy, discipline, labour, expenditure, punishment and control in general, among other things and shall also be responsible for developing an atmosphere that is conducive and correctional in nature and providing leadership in every aspect of prison management.

(3) The Superintendent shall also take care of the duties, suggestions, planning, organizing, directing, guiding, coordinating, supervising and controlling all prison activities.

(4) The Superintendent shall be the head of the prison and all officers shall be subordinate to him.
