An offier who is promoted shall take rank and command accordingly only if he is re-appointed to his ship in the higher rank. If not so re-appointed, he shall continue to perform the duties of, and assume command in the rank from which he has been promoted, but he shall be senior to other officers to that rank, until relieved or until other instructions are issued by the Chief of the Naval Staff.
