TAMIL NADU TEACHERS EDUCATION UNIVERSITY KARAPAKKAM, CHENNAI-600 097 ORDINANCES ORDINANCE - 1 BOARDS OF STUDIES (ORDINANCES) The Board of Studies (B.Ed) and the Board of Studies (PG & Research) for affiliated colleges shall be authorities of the University under Section 16 of the Act.

1.(a) There shall be a Board of Studies attached to each Department of Teaching and Research of the University

(b) There shall be three Boards of Studies for affiliated colleges of education Boards of Studies viz., Board of Studies for UG (UG Board), Board of Studies for PG (PG Board) and Board of Research Studies (BORS) for M.Phil & Ph.D

(c) The Board PG and Research shall not have more than ten Members, Constitution of Board including ex-officio members, out of which one will (PG & Research) be from outside the State and one will be from other University within the State. The Heads of the University Departments shall ex-officio member of the Board. The following shall ordinarily be the functions of the Board of Studies (PG & Research).

(i) to advise the Vice-Chancellor and the Syndicate on all matters concerning the Research Programmes undertaken in the University Departments and Departments of Research in the Affiliated Colleges and Centres of Research recognized by this University and formulate the rules governing research degrees.

(ii) to collect requests from various Departments of Research for courses for Research Students in field under the purview of other Departments and to make recommendations in regard to such courses;

(iii) to plan for inter-disciplinary Research Programmes;

(iv) to make recommendations with regard to general guidelines to be followed in making selection of research students for admission and for award of fellowships; to identify areas of research and recommend them to the Syndicate.

(v) to identify and formulate Research Schemes eligible for Central and State Governments and other institutions and authorities like UGC.

CSIR, ICSSR etc., and other resource mobilization measures.

(d) The Board shall consist of not less than twenty and not more than thirty Constitution of members, out of which at least two will be from Board of Studies (B.Ed) outside the State.

The remaining members shall be appointed based on the teaching experience provided no two members of the same faculty shall be from the same institution.

2. (a) Members of the Board of Studies reference in Statute 1 of this chapter Term of Office other than Ex-officio Members shall be appointed by the Syndicate. One person shall be member for only one Board of Studies at a time in the University. This will not, however, be applicable to Board of Studies (PG & Research).

(b) The term of membership of Board of Studies shall be restricted for one term of Three Years only except in the case of Ex-officio Members. However, the Syndicate shall have power to extend the term of a Board till such time a next Board is constituted.

(i) Provided, the Syndicate shall be competent to reconstitute Board of Studies necessary before the normal expiry of the period as and when found necessary.

(ii) Provided also that the Syndicate may declare any member of the Board of Studies to have vacated his membership for reasons to be recorded.

3.(a) The Chairman of each Board of Studies will be nominated by the Chairman Syndicate from among the members of the Board concerned.

(i) In the case of Board of Studies (PG & Research), the Senior most Professor in the University Departments in the concerned subjects will be nominated as a Chairman.

(ii) In the case of UG Board of Studies, Senior most Associate Professor/ Professor from the affiliated colleges will be nominated as a Chairman.

(iii) In the event of non - availability of Professor in the University Departments, it will be open for the Syndicate to appoint the senior most faculty from the affiliated colleges as a Chairman for Board of Studies (PG & Research).

(iv) In the event of vacancy in the office of the Chairman or if the Chairman leaves India, the Vice-Chancellor shall appoint another member of the Board temporarily to act as Chairman in the vacancy or until the Chairman returns to India.

(b) The Chairman shall have the power to Co-Opt Experts to attend as Observers, at specific meetings as and when necessary with the prior permission of the Vice-Chancellor.

(c) The Chairman of each Board will prepare the Agenda and Notes on Agenda and circulate the same to the members of the Board before convening the meeting of the Boards of Studies.

4. It shall be the duty of each Board of Studies to consider and report on any Functions matter referred to it in accordance with the Laws (Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations) of this University by the Syndicate or by the Academic Council or the Faculty of the concerned subject with which it details.

5. (i) The Board will make recommendations with regards to Courses of Study Powers and Examinations in the subject with which it deals.

(ii) The Board will prescribe on text-books and reference books.

(iii) Wherever necessary it will consult specialists who are not members of the Board in this regard;

(iv) Each Board shall have power to recommend to the Syndicate, persons suitable for appointment as Examiners, Question Paper Setters in the subject with which it deals.

6. Meetings of Boards of Studies shall be convened by the Registrar in Meetings consultation with the Chairman of the Board at least once a Year or on the written request of not less than one-third of the number of members serving on the Board at the time. Wherever necessary when some urgent matters (dealing with the syllabus etc.,) need to be discussed, additional meetings of Boards may be convened.

7. The Chairman shall preside at all meetings of the Board of Studies, and in Quorum his absence, at any particular meeting, the members present shall elect their own Chairman. The quorum will be one-third of the total members of the Board.
