UNIVERSITY GRANTS COMMISSION BAHADUR SHAH ZAFAR MARG, NEW DELHI UGC (Recruitment)Rules, (Various posts) 1983 To be published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary Part II- Section 3, Sub-Section (i) Ministry of Education & Culture (Department of Education) New Delhi, dated the 19th May, 1983 NOTIFICATION C.S.R.– In exercise of the powers conferred by sub- section (1) read with clause (d) of sub-section (2) of section 25 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 (3 of 1956), and in supersession of the University Grants Commission (Terms and Conditions of Service of Employees) Rules, 1950, except as respects things done or omitted to be done before such superession, the Central Government hereby makes the following regulating the method of recruitment to the posts in the University Grants Commission, namely : –
1. Short title and commencement
(1) These rules may be called the University Grants Commission (Recruitment) Rules, 1983.
(2) They shall come into force on the date of their publication in the official Gazette.
Application: These rules shall apply to all posts specified in column 2 of the Schedule annexed hereto.
2. Classification and Scale of Pay :
The classification of posts, and the scales of pay attached thereto shall be as specified in column 3 and 4 of the said schedule appended herewith.

3. Method of recuitment, age limit and other qualifications:
The method of recruitment the upper age limit, qualifications for recruitment and other matters relating to the said posts shall be as specified in column 5 to 12 of the aforesaid Schedule.
4. Disqualification : No person– He has entered into or contracted a marriage with a person having a spouse living, or ... having a spouse living has entered into or contracted a marrage with any person, shall be eligible for appointment to any of the said posts: Provided that the University Grants Commission may, if satisfied that such marriage is permissible under the personal law applicable to such person and the other party to the marriage and there are other grounds for so doing, exempt any person from the operation of this rule.
5. Power to relax :
Where the Central Government is of opinion that it necessary or expedient so to do, it may, by order, for reasons to recorded in writing, relax any of the provisions of these rules with respect to any class or category of persons.
6. Saving:
Nothing in these rules shall affect reservations, relaxation age limit and other concession, required to be provided for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled tribes and other special categories of persons in accordance with the orders issued by the Central Government from time to time in this regard.
