(1) A candidate shall be eligible for admission to a research course for the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree, if he or she has possessed a Master’s degree from a recognised university or institution.
(2) The procedure for receiving applications for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall be laid down from time to time by the Board of Studies of each School constituted for the said purpose.
(3) Candidates shall be selected for admission to the Ph.D. programme on the basis of norms laid down by the Board of Studies of each School.
(4) The selected Ph.D. students shall be assigned Ph.D. supervisors through a procedure laid down by the Board of Studies of each School and in each case such assignment shall be considered and decided by the Board of Studies.
(5) No academic faculty shall have more than six registered Ph.D. students at any given time.
(6) The assigned supervisor may recommend up to two advisers as co-supervisors for the student whose names shall have to be approved by the Board of Studies.
(7) All Ph.D. students shall be required to complete a specified number of credits of pre-Ph.D. course work within the first year of their admission.
(8) In the case of a transferred student from other university, he or she shall obtain his or her Ph.D. degree from the University and this requirement may be exempted at the discretion of the Board of Studies after taking into account course work that may previously have been undertaken by the student at another university.
(9) For the purpose of availing exemption as specified in sub-ordinance (8), the students shall submit an application to the Board of Studies along with all documents including a full description of the course already taken, accompanied by the syllabus and a copy of the transcripts.
(10) A candidate shall be declared to have successfully completed the pre-Ph.D. course, if he or she obtains a minimum CGPA of 6.0.
(11) The students who fail in any of the credit course, or get a CGPA of less than 6.0, or show lack of interest and motivation for research after completion of course work, shall not be confirmed in the Ph.D. programme and their name shall be struck off from the rolls of the University.
(12) After successful completion of pre-Ph.D. course work, the student shall be required to submit a detailed proposal in the form of a synopsis of his or her proposed research work within three months from the date of declaration of result, and the student shall be considered to have registered for the Ph.D. programme when the Board of Studies approves his or her formal proposal.
(13) The students shall endeavour to submit their thesis within the period of five years or ten semesters from the date of confirmation of his or her registration.
(14) The name of the student shall be removed from the rolls of the University, if he or she fails to submit his or her thesis within the period specified in sub-ordinance (12).

(15) If the student is unable to submit his or her thesis as specified in sub-ordinance (12), he or she shall make an application for extension which shall specify reasons and circumstances for his or her inability to submit thesis before the required date, and thereafter, the application shall be considered by the Board of Research Studies, which shall review each case and make a specific recommendation about the grant of extension.
(16) No student shall be permitted to submit his or her thesis for the Ph.D. degree unless he or she has pursued a course of research at the University for not less than two years after the confirmation of his or her registration.
