    How to read these numbers

    Five things worth knowing before you cite this page or build against it.

    What counts as one record in these numbers?

    A record is one case row in the keyword index: a case number, court, parties and the metadata we could extract from the source portal. A minority of records also carry a stored judgment or order document, meaning we hold that document rather than only the case metadata. Where that split is published for a court, the table on this page shows both counts, records and document-bearing, so the difference is visible rather than blended into a single figure.

    What is the difference between status-only and document-bearing, and which endpoints reach which?

    A status-only record has case metadata but no stored document. Document-bearing means we hold the underlying judgment or order document, not that its text has been extracted or indexed for full text search, that is a separate step. Where this split is published for a court, it is shown as two counts rather than blended into one figure. POST /search/cases runs against the full keyword index, so it reaches every record regardless of status. POST /search/cases/semantic runs against the vector index, which only covers the roughly 2 million cases that have been analysed and embedded, a curated subset rather than the whole corpus. GET /cases/{id}/pdf can only ever return something for a document-bearing record; called on a status-only record it has nothing to serve.

    How does this compare to the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG)?

    We intend to publish our coverage as a percentage of the NJDG's published case totals, with the date we read the NJDG figures stated alongside. That reconciliation has not been done yet, so this page does not compute or display a coverage percentage against NJDG today. Treat the numbers here as our own counts, not as a claim about what share of the national docket they represent, until that comparison is published with a read date.

    What are the known gaps in the corpus?

    Four gaps we know about and are not hiding: pre-CNR records that predate the eCourts case numbering scheme and so carry weaker identifiers; scanned-only PDFs where the source portal never published extractable text, which means the document exists but is not full-text searchable; tribunals that have no bulk data portal, which limits ingestion to what can be scraped page by page; and source portals that rate limit ingestion, which slows how quickly a large backlog can be pulled in. None of these gaps are estimated on this page as a percentage; they are named so an integrator can plan around them.

    Is 315.6 million records or freshness a service level commitment?

    No. Last ingest time and latest decision date per court are facts read from the pipeline at the moment this page's data was generated, not a promise about how current the corpus will stay. We do not publish a median ingestion lag, an uptime figure or a latency SLA for this data. If your use case needs a contracted freshness commitment, that is negotiated as part of an Enterprise or data licensing agreement, not something this public page can offer.

    This page is a public, self serve view of what is already in the corpus. If your use case needs a contracted refresh schedule, a specific court's backlog cleared, or a licensing agreement for bulk use, that is a conversation with our licensing team, not a setting on this page.
